HEATHER MARTIN ART
Abstract paintings sensing internal space.
Hello there!
Ever since I was young, I have been keenly interested in what lay beyond the surface of everyday life. It always seemed like there must be something more - a mystery to be discovered or curiosities to be pondered. I feel that I'm constantly on the threshold between the familiar and the unfamiliar, with a flickering sense of the supernatural...the uncanny.
My life got steered towards a business career when I was in high school, even though I took several art classes and enjoyed them. Later, in my early thirties, I went to see the Richard Diebenkorn retrospective in San Francisco, and there entered the gallery with his Ocean Park Series, which was created at Venice Beach in L.A. Having grown up in a beach town in Southern California, I sensed that, while the paintings didn't look like the beach, they certainly felt like the beach. After that I had to know how to express myself that way...and so started my artistic and creative journey.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
Mysticism, antiquity, old textures, and color inspire me to keep painting. There's one poem, by Rilke, that has fueled my art in the past decade:
Ahh, not to be cut off, Not by the slightest partition, From the Law of the stars The inner - what is it? If not intensified sky Hurled through with birds, And deep with the winds of homecoming
I get involved in many different media, from collage with acrylic paints, watercolor for sketches, and mostly oil paintings. I use non-traditional additives and tools, as well as the traditional ones, like brushes, and media. There are many layers that occur on a painting before I call it finished. It must have a balance - I like an asymmetrical balance best.
I started showing with the Red Umbrellas, in public venues in San Francisco. I have also been shown in national juried exhibits across the country, winning awards and selling from those shows. I received my Master of Fine Art from the San Francisco Institute in 2009.
